The Lufkin Daily News writes about a man in Texas who is scammed by someone claiming to be from FEMA.
A local marine store owner told police he was scammed out of more than $57,000 worth of boats and other supplies by a man posing as a FEMA representative.
Carlton Callahan of Lufkin, owner of Callahan Marine in the 1900 block of South First Street, told police that on Sept. 11, 2005, he was contacted by a man who identified himself as Mike Love with FEMA. The man said boats were needed to go to New Orleans as quickly as possible in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and that he would buy them from Callahan. The man and a woman he identified as his secretary came to Callahan Marine and left with a variety of boats.
Later, Callahan attempted to get payment from FEMA, which told him they had given a payment of $177,00 for the boats to Banita Creek Hall in Nacogdoches. Callahan made further attempts to get payment from the man, but none was successful.
An investigation is ongoing, a police report stated.
