
I grew up during the cold war; we hated the Russians and we were told they weren't very keen on us either. (Remember when Russia was the enemy? It all seems so provincial what with 9/11. Think about it. Who would you be more afraid of to confront
while walking down a dark alley? Some crazed terrorist or a Russian guy?)
Yes, we were sure the reds were going to drop the big one on us at any moment. We had air raid drills and took visits to the school's bomb shelter. It wasn't a matter of "if "- it was a matter of "when."
They told us that once the bomb hit many people would be vaporized immediately, others would live a few days and some might actually go on for many years dying slow deaths from some brew of radiation poisoning, cancer and other bomb related afflictions. Essentially, if you didn't drop dead immediately, the fall out would make you wish you had.
