Oh no! Say it isn't so! AIG (American International Group) is the latest company to come forward with bad news for its customers. A stolen computer with personal information
on over 900,00 people was stolen from an office (along with a camera and some other items). Once again, the information is not encrypted, but merely password protected.
It's a delicate balance, for sure. I worked for one company that made logging onto the network a ten minute hellish exercise all in the name of protecting data. It's also not clear that any of the organizations that have had computers stolen have actually had the sensitive data compromised. Perhaps the thief just wanted a computer?
All the same. Individuals trust companies to keep their personal information secure. Identity theft is a nightmare. What lengths should organizations go to to keep data out of malevolent hands? Certainly, it's got to be better than a password.
