First of all, I want to point out how thrilled I am to see that one of my recent blog posts has been listed on Google Finance's listing for Dell Inc.(NASDAQ:DELL). Hooray for the power of the blogsphere!
Today's topic comes from my dear husband who recently made a trip to Cleveland. He made his own arrangements using Expedia Inc. (Public, NASDAQ:EXPE) and discovered that the cost to fly US Airways (NYSE: LCC) from Philadelphia to Cleveland and back was $1001.00. However, because he was going to be near Washington DC, he looked up the cost of flying the same exact flight - only originating in Baltimore before stopping in Philly and low and behold, he found the cost was just $264.00.
This was the SAME EXACT FLIGHT - only with an extra leg from Baltimore to Philadelphia. The extra leg, meant more fuel, more time and 180 miles - and yet the flight was nearly a quarter of the cost! Why? Who knows - perhaps its because competitor Southwest Airlines Co. (Public, NYSE:LUV) Southwest Airlines flys out of Philly too.
The lesson - buyer beware - and be sure to check cost of flying out of neighboring airports before buying your tickets.
