I came upon a great cartoon today - I'm a bit of a news junkie and I'm not sure where I saw it, so I apologize for not crediting its creator. (If anyone knows - please let me know and I'll update this post.) In any case here's the gist:
Mel Gibson's Hollywood agent is on the phone with Mel saying something like "Mel Baby, remember! It was the booze! That's right, tell them you have a drinking problem and the booze made you an anti-semite. See! You're the victim!"
I loved it - especially since it captures my sentiments about the Gibson matter so well. Hollywood is used to actors who take drugs or drink too much; it's no longer scandalous- or even interesting. Careers aren't lost over substance abuse- so why not blame Mel's outrageous behavior on drink. After all, I'm sure that when he's sober he's not bigoted at all - at least not vocally.
Today, Marie Osmond (I like her - pretty and "a 'lil bit country") was hospitalized amidst rumors that she was suicidal. Of course, her publicist claims she merely had a bad reaction to some legitimate medication.
Now, the truth is, I really don't know what's going on with Marie - and I wish her luck in her recovery no matter what the issue. What concerns me, is that there's this much spin in the media. Just as famous stars have people out there trying to protect and enhance their image (truthfully or not) - businesses have people working full time doing the same thing. It amazes me to think about how carefully crafted so much of what we read is. What if we applied the same amount of cynicism about what's happening in the business world as we have about tabloid gossip? How much of what you read would you believe?
So what do Mel and Marie have in common: publicists working over-time.
