The laws and regulations don't stop violations of human rights or protect the environment. There needs to be immediate regulation of mining companies." Another said that the mining companies have “been implicated in well-documented cases of human rights violations and environmental abuses ranging from the destruction of protected areas, to death threats and assassinations."
The growing area of business ethics known as Corporate Social Responsibility has taken hold in Canada, at least with private watchdog groups. These groups say that the mining companies are unwilling to police themselves and that the government is guilty of ignoring the problems. Although the government has been working on a CSR framework that would bind Canadian businesses, progress has been slow. If taken to task for the alleged human rights and environmental ethical lapses, the Canadian mining industry would be guilty of very damaging Bad Business.
