This is an update on
my previous report on the baseball drug scandal. This morning, as scheduled, the
Mitchell Report on steroids in baseball was released. As expected, some of the biggest names in baseball are on the list. These include Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, Miguel Tejada, Eric Gagne, and Paul Lo Duca. These are just the prominent players mentioned; many more will be found in the
entire 311-page report (a large PDF file).

The media will focus on the big names in this report, and on their use of illegal drugs to enhance their athletic performance. However, it is not possible to blame just the players. For every player there was an owner and a manager, plus a number of coaches, that looked the other way when the rumors of steroid use started a number of years ago. These club employees must have known that there was something to the rumors. They are guilty of either ignoring the problem or of covering it up.
So when you see a report focusing on a player, will yourself to look deeper. Think of the owner of the franchise that player worked for, and on the manager that saw him every day during the season. Those management personnel are every bit as guilty as the players in the headline. The owners and the managers are guilty of poor ethics and Bad Business.
