I recently ran across an excellent
common-sense article by John D. Copeland about the ethics of business gifts, a timely topic. His first rule is to make sure what your company’s policy on gifts actually is. Some companies absolutely forbid either giving or receiving of any gifts whatsoever. Others set limits on the types or values of gifts that are allowed. Some companies require that you get the permission of an officer.

Copeland also cites a number of gift-giving rules that are almost purely common sense. For example, “Gifts of alcohol are dangerous because they offend some people for religious reasons” and “Gag gifts are a bad idea. The gift’s recipient may not share your sense of humor.” These are things that we all should have learned long ago. Some of us, however, have not.
And remember that cash gifts are always out of order, as are gifts of any kind to federal, state, or local government employees. All of the various rules can become extremely confusing. Mr. Copeland recommends sending holiday cards instead of giving gifts. As he says, they are simpler, cheaper, and safer.
