Strangely though, my healthy regard for the processes of business came during a stint as a safety engineer. I analyzed business operations of all kinds for management and process problems which could lead to personal injury. That gave me an inside view of literally hundreds of business types. Probably because of my education, I gravitated naturally to the management side of things. From there, my inquisitive and philosophically oriented brain led me toward the intersection of business and ethics.
In the middle years of my career, I spent a lot of time developing systems for analyzing business processes, both automated and manual. That kept my focus in the area of business tactics and strategy, with a significant concentration in business ethics. Later in my career, I was involved in a number of entrepreneurial endeavors, especially in the computer and Web areas, which further honed my knowledge of and interest in business ethics.Although I didn’t know it at the time, I may as well have been aiming directly toward the writing of this column. The issues of business ethics have been important to me as a business man, manager, and consumer for over thirty years. I believe that I understand how businesses are supposed to work, and therefore feel able to recognize when they are not working as they should.
I look forward to interacting with all of you on the issues surrounding business ethics in today’s multifaceted and rapidly changing corporate world.
