The
Port of Seattle has been placed under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department. The charges include wasting public money and construction contract fraud. The State had previously been investigating the case. There is a possibility that the violations are widespread enough that a number of Federal agencies could be involved, including the U.S. attorney's office, FBI and Office of the Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The state has released a 334-page audit indicating what it calls “lax management” on the part of Port officials made the environment at the huge concern very open to fraudulent behavior. Many of the contracts that are being questioned involved the recent construction of a third runway at the Seattle-Tacoma Airport.
Public hearings have been set for some of the allegations in the audit report, and the involvement of Federal agencies is expected to be immediate. The probe is said to include possible criminal charges to be filed against port officials and perhaps some contractors. This is apparently Bad Business on a monumental scale.
